UNC Cancer Network

THE UNC CANCER SPECIALTY CLINIC is accepting referrals for patients and families needing support after a cancer diagnosis on Friday, March 26.  Appointments may be made by calling (252) 449-8265.
 
The community is invited to hear Justin Yopp, PhD, provide a Lunch and Learn workshop at noon on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Outer Banks Hospital Cancer Resource Center.   It is entitled:  “Helping Family and Friends Support a Cancer Diagnosis.”  Pre-registration is encouraged and may be made by calling (252) 475-5903.
 
Justin Yopp, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry in the UNC School of Medicine and the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. Yopp provides evaluations and psychotherapy for pediatric and adult cancer patients who are (or have been) treated at UNC.   He also works with children whose parents have a cancer diagnosis and provides neuropsychological testing for pediatric oncology patients as well as participates in research initiatives.
 
Yopp came to UNC from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN where he served as a pediatric psychologist and coordinator of in the inpatient consultation-liaison service. 
 
Yopp earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology form Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, MI. He completed a pediatric psychology postdoctoral fellowship at Children’s Research Institute Center for Behavioral Health at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.

Dare County is one of the original sites for the UNC Cancer Network, an outreach effort of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the N.C. Cancer Hospital in partnership with the County of Dare.
 
The UNC Cancer Network seeks to improve cancer care and support across the state through 2nd Opinion Oncology Specialty Clinics in Dare County, Telemedicine consultations and videoconferencing of multidisciplinary team meetings with UNC’s top-notch patient care teams as they review individual treatment plans, Patient Navigation Programs – which connect oncology nurses with patients, families and caregivers to help overcome health system barriers and facilitate timely access to quality care through all phases of the cancer experience, community-based support such as Hands of Hope Community Care Team, and community presentations including Lunch and Learns and the Coping With Cancer symposium.
