Emergency Management Director Active in Getting the Word Out

Sandy Sanderson, Dare County’s Emergency Management Director, answers a questionWith hurricane season approaching, Dare County’s Emergency Management Director Sandy Sanderson is busy revising plans and procedures should the need arise to evacuate.

``I want to impress upon people that the wisest and safest way to deal with a hurricane is to get out of its way,’’ says Sanderson, ``My fear is that our residents will not remember the destruction a storm can cause because we have been fortunate to have avoided a direct, major hit for several years.’’

Sanderson has been working to get the word out now while residents have the time to make their plans in the event of a called evacuation. One way that is proving to be fun as well as educational that he is trying this year is morning announcements at several Dare schools and in specials, exploratories and non-core classes in schools currently without televised morning announcements.

Sanderson is taping segments in advance that will be edited into Tuesday through Friday morning announcements during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 25 to 31. Each day, students will hear about and learn ways they can help their families prepare for hurricane season.

A different set of messages is being prepared for students at each level, elementary, middle and high school using student interviewers at each level.

MMSEM

Sandy Sanderson, Dare County’s Emergency Management Director, answers a question posed by eighth grader Carson Davis at Manteo Middle School on what needs to be done by residents to be ready in the event a hurricane requires evacuation. The interview will be edited into televised morning announcements at the school for use during National Hurricane Preparedness Week later this month. Similar interviews are being done at the elementary and high school levels for student viewing in a variety of situations.
