Ribbon Cutting and Open House at Substance Abuse Center

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House will be held Thursday, October 2 at 3 p.m. at the Dare County Substance Abuse Center located at 2808 S. Croatan Highway in Nags Head. The community is invited to attend.

``My fellow commissioners and I are extremely proud to see the substance abuse program up and running,’’ commented Dare County Commission Chairman Warren Judge during a recent tour of the facility. ``We have worked hard to establish this program and the UNC Cancer Project for the continued health and welfare of our neighbors here in Dare County for years to come.’’

The program, New Horizons…A Dare County Initiative, is provided by the Dare County Department of Public Health and has been serving clients since mid-June.

Persons or families experiencing problems with substance abuse can schedule an appointment by calling (252) 441-2324. Walk-ins are also accepted. Referrals are not required, but are accepted from many sources including hospitals, other treatment programs, private therapists, court officials, physicians and social workers..

``The clients we have been seeing so far are pleased with the help they are getting through New Horizons,’’ said Health Director, Anne Thomas. ``Typically, the return rate for substance abuse clients is around 60%. We are maintaining a return rate of 95% at this time. One client who has not missed an appointment commented, `The staff act like you really want me here and want to help me.’ We are reaching our community.’’
New Horizons offers Prevention programs, Assessments, Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Adolescent and Family Services, Aftercare Services, Referrals to Other Agencies and a Helpline. The Helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist callers with substance abuse issues. Callers will speak to a counselor immediately by dialing 866-202-5526.

The program plans to add a six-bed detox unit to stabilize clients prior to treatment and a ten-bed, short-term residential center in 2009.

Sheila Davies serves as the Program Manager. Cheri Peele, Nancy Gilmer and Priscilla Broussard are Clinical Counselors with Tim Hill, Mike Damoth and Amber Walton working as Community Counselors. Hill will cover south of Oregon Inlet, Damoth will provide services for Roanoke Island and the mainland and Walton will work with the communities north of Oregon Inlet.

For more information, call New Horizons at (252) 441-2324.
