Commissioners Meeting
Troop
117 Scout Master Bill Owen (left) stands with the five young men who
attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2009, (left to right) Harris Styons,
Michael Ross, Drew Keenan, Andrew Martin and Jonathan Delucia. Owen
introduced the five to the Dare County Commissioners during their
January 19 meeting. In his remarks, Owen explained that, according to
national statistics, only four out of 100 Scouts reach the rank of Eagle
Scout; whereas, 25 % of Troop 117’s members have undergone the rigorous
training required to attain the rank.
Dare County Commission Chairman Warren Judge presents a Dare County
flag to Cub Scout Christopher Pokorny of Troop 117 as his mother, Ann,
looks on. Christopher was invited by Governor Bev Perdue to represent
Troop 117 during ceremonies in
Raleigh
on February 8 commemorating the hundredth anniversary of scouting.
County Manager Bobby Outten read a resolution approved by the
Commissioners that details the benefits that can be realized by youth
who participate in scouting for five or more years. According to the
resolution, national studies point out that these youth will become more
active, competent and intelligent members of society who exercise
leadership ability.
