Plans for
Senior Games 2010 Being Finalized |
|
On
your mark, get set, go!
Volunteers and Dare County staff are finalizing plans for the 2010
Senior Games which will be held during the last two weeks in April. The
program features nearly 20 athletic events and over 30 Arts events for
county residents over 55 years of age.
``The games offer competition categories for everyone whether the
interest is athletic or artistic, said Brandi Rheubottom, who oversees
the Senior Games as Senior Services Manager with Dare County Older Adult
Services. ``In addition,
there are age and gender brackets for the athletic events to equalize
the competition.
Seniors wishing to participate must have turned 55 by December 31, 2010
and resided in Dare or Currituck County at least three consecutive
months of the year. The two weeks of competitions begin with an opening
ceremony complete with a lighting of the torch ceremony.
The
Dare County Senior Games are conducted in accordance with the official
North Carolina Senior Games organization rules and policies. This
organization sponsors Senior Games in all counties with county winners
eligible to compete later at the state level in Raleigh which could lead
to qualifying for the Nationals.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded to the winners with medalists
qualifying for the Raleigh competitions.
Dare
County seniors wishing to participate in this years event may contact
Rheubottm at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills at (252) 475-5635 or
brandiwh@darenc.com. There is a
a registration fee of $8 prior to February 19 after which the fee
becomes $14. In addition, entrants must provide their own equipment for
certain events such as bicycling, golf, tennis and Silver Arts.
Local organizations provide facility use for such events as bowling and
golf with the YMCA in Nags Head donating its facilities for swimming
entrants.
Due
to her efforts with games over the years and with other programs for
seniors, Rheubottom has recently been elected as a member of the North
Carolina Senior Games Board of Directors.
Rheubottom has been a longtime advocate of statewide health and
wellness programs for seniors and an outstanding leader in community
service and charitable organizations, according to state officials.
According to Brad Allen, President and Executive Director of the NC
Senior Games, `` Rheubottom has done much to improve the quality of life
for older persons in her community with an unparalleled energy and
enthusiasm. Her willingness
to promote Senior Games and be a part of the Board of Directors is a
tremendous asset to North Carolina Senior Games and to the health of
persons age fifty-five (55) and better throughout North Carolina.
