Local Presentations Made Regarding UNC Health System
Cancer Care and Service Enhancement Project for
Dare County
Representatives of the
University
of North Carolina Health Care System
have put the finishing touches on the Cancer Care and Service
Enhancement Program being offered to the
Dare
County
community and are helping to spread the word.
Dr.
Thomas Shea, M.D. spoke to the Dare County Commissioners at their
regular meeting Monday and to the Dare County Chamber of Commerce on
Wednesday explaining how the program will work in
Dare
County
to benefit individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Planning began in January, 2006
when
County
Commissioners
invited UNC to come up with a much needed program to assist Dare
families make the best decisions regarding treatment when one is
diagnosed with cancer.
Two UNC Patient Navigators, based
in
Dare
County,
will be available to help anyone diagnosed with cancer find their way
through what is often a confusing journey through the health care and
support services system to obtain the best treatment and guidance.
A satellite clinic of the UNC
Cancer Hospital
is scheduled to open in Dare
County
on June 6 with rotating sub-specialists to visit every other week.
The
UNC representatives plan to meet with local groups and organizations to
explain how individuals can take advantage of this service. These
community presentations will culminate with a dinner meeting in early
June for physicians who administer to patients residing in
Dare
County.
At this meeting, physicians will learn how they can access the new UNC
services including the Patient Navigators, the satellite clinic,
appropriate clinical trials and tumor boards for treatment planning.
