Local Presentations Made Regarding UNC Health System
Cancer Care and Service Enhancement Project for Dare County

Representatives of the University of North Carolina Health Care System have put the finishing touches on the Cancer Care and Service Enhancement Program being offered to the Dare County community and are helping to spread the word.

Explaining UNC cancer services project Dr. Thomas Shea, M.D. spoke to the Dare County Commissioners at their regular meeting Monday and to the Dare County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday explaining how the program will work in Dare County to benefit individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Planning began in January, 2006 when County Commissioners invited UNC to come up with a much needed program to assist Dare families make the best decisions regarding treatment when one is diagnosed with cancer.

Two UNC Patient Navigators, based in Dare County, will be available to help anyone diagnosed with cancer find their way through what is often a confusing journey through the health care and support services system to obtain the best treatment and guidance.  A satellite clinic of the UNC Cancer Hospital is scheduled to open in Dare County on June 6 with rotating sub-specialists to visit every other week.

Meeting with community leaders The UNC representatives plan to meet with local groups and organizations to explain how individuals can take advantage of this service. These community presentations will culminate with a dinner meeting in early June for physicians who administer to patients residing in Dare County. At this meeting, physicians will learn how they can access the new UNC services including the Patient Navigators, the satellite clinic, appropriate clinical trials and tumor boards for treatment planning.
