Maintenance Crew Leader Receives Employee of the Month

Post Date:08/08/2016 8:30 a.m.
Jason McPherson, Parks Maintenance Crew Leader with Parks and Recreation, is the July 2016 Dare County Employee of the Month. Spencer Gregory presented McPherson with the award at the August 1, 2016 Board of Commissioners meeting.

"Jason and his crew maintain nine parks and recreation facilities and fields on Roanoke Island. All of these facilities have grass to cut and need landscaping. Most have bathrooms that need to be cleaned daily, including on the weekends and a few have playgrounds that need to be regularly inspected and maintained. If a facility contains a ball park or sports field, Jason and his crew are out there lining, dragging and maintaining those ball fields before and after every game, " said Gregory during the presentation.

McPherson was hired in July 1995 as a Distribution Systems Specialist with the Water Department. In May 2004, he transferred to Parks and Recreation as a Parks Maintenance Worker. In January 2010, McPherson was promoted to Parks Maintenance Crew Leader.

"When we host tournaments in the summer, Jason is out there daily on the field for 12 to 16 hours, making sure everyone is happy and the facilities and fields are up to par. All of this hard work occurs outside in the elements. Jason never complains and gets his job done whether there's a 100 degree heat index or a wind chill in the single digits," remarked Gregory.

When McPherson isn't working you can find him umpiring youth baseball, announcing Manteo High School football games, or watching his son Chipper playing baseball or football.
