After pursuing all options, the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) has determined that constructing a new overhead transmission line at the south end of the Bonner Bridge is the most expedient way to restore transmission service to Hatteras Island.  The estimated timeframe for restoring power to Hatteras Island is now 1 -2 days as of Thursday, August 3 at 9:00 a.m. Dare County officials are working closely with CHEC to coordinate the safe return of visitors as soon as possible.

CHEC is issuing morning and evening updates regarding power restoration efforts. To access this information, visit www.chec.coop/ or their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CapeHatterasElectricCoop/

A mandatory evacuation remains in place for visitors to Hatteras Island. Currently, Essential Personnel (Priority One), Permanent Residents & Essential Personnel for Critical Businesses (Priority Two), and Non-Resident Property Owners & Non-Resident Employees of Non-Critical Businesses (Priority Three) are allowed access to Hatteras Island with proper reentry credentials. Details regarding reentry procedures are available at darenc.com/reentry.

Dare County Emergency Management has determined that water resources are adequate to meet present demands and has lifted the mandatory water restriction that was in place for Hatteras Island.

For those on Hatteras Island, it is important to remember that mandatory power conservation measures remain in effect.
