Remain Mindful as Tropical Depression #8 Approaches Our Coast

Tropical System #8 is forecast to strengthen to a Tropical Storm as it approaches our coast later today. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Hatteras Island, the adjacent coastal waters and the Pamlico Sound.

The chances of wind speeds reaching tropical force have decreased, but residents and visitors are asked to remain mindful of the storm until it's headed away from the Outer Banks, as forecasted to happen later today.

While the rainfall potential has decreased, 1 to 2 inches of rain is still expected and isolated heavy rainfall may produce some minor flooding. The timing of potential heavy rain could occur any time through tonight in heavy rain bands.

The forecasted threat of storm surge inundation is minimal but surf conditions will be rough with some minor beach erosion possible and strong rip currents expected.

Garbage collection customers are asked to bring in their cans from the street and secure them as soon as possible following service this morning.

Once this storm moves away, Dare County Emergency Management will continue to closely monitor Tropical Depression #9 and provide updates as necessary.
