Many helpful programs are offered throughout the year to enrich the lives of adults in Dare County. Activities include opportunities for recreation and social interaction along with a variety of support services for nutrition, health and transportation. A caring and dedicated staff strives to help each adult enjoy an active and healthy life.

Activities and services for adults are conducted at three centers strategically located throughout Dare County. Facilities include the Thomas A Baum Senior Center in Kill Devil Hills, the Dare County Center in Manteo, and the Fessenden Center in Buxton. One of the highlights of the year is the Outer Banks Senior Games. Each spring, those 55 and older have fun competing in a wide range of sporting events and artistic performances. Like the Olympics, achievements are recognized with gold, silver, and bronze awards and the privilege of representing Dare County in the statewide North Carolina Senior Games. Valuable information about Medicare programs is provided by the Adult & Senior Services Department through the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). This innovative program created by the North Carolina Department of Insurance offers free counseling about general Medicare issues, insurance for long-term care, and Medicare's prescription drug coverage. Tax Aid, through AARP, is also available by appointment during the tax preparation season.

Many adults use the transportation services provided by the Dare County Transportation Services Department. Round-trip transportation is available, by appointment, for doctor visits, shopping trips and other needs on a scheduled basis Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.  Visit the Dare County Transportation Services Department website.
