Dare County Soil and Water Conservation District’s purpose is to protect and enhance water quality in Dare County through land conservation, environmental education and outreach, stormwater management, and drainage improvements. Dare SWCD offers cost-sharing and grant seeking to aid in drainage and water quality improvements, and for installation of BMPs. We offer technical support in assisting with planning, design, and implementation of Best Management Practices.

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are techniques used to control stormwater runoff, sediment control, and soil stabilization, as well as management decisions to prevent or reduce nonpoint source pollution. Stormwater BMPs are designed to remove pollutants from urban runoff, improve water quality, and control quantity before the water reaches our oceans, sounds, canals, etc. The EPA defines a BMP as a "technique, measure or structural control that is used for a given set of conditions to manage the quantity and improve the quality of stormwater runoff in the most cost-effective manner."
