Frequently
Asked Questions
What
if
you sold, traded, junked, or gifted your vehicle follow options 1 or 2 listed below?
-
If you transferred
your license plates from one vehicle to another, no refund
or prorated bill is applicable. Pay the tax bill on the old
vehicle. You will not get a tax bill on the new vehicle
until you renew your plates again.
-
If you did not
transfer your plates, you should turn them in to the NC
Department of Motor Vehicle in person located in Island
Pharmacy at the Chesley Mall in Manteo or by mail, to: PO Box
448, Manteo, NC 27954 with a self-addressed stamped
envelope. Send a copy of the license plate surrender receipt
you receive from the DMV and a bill of sale to the tax
department for a possible prorated tax bill or refund,
within 1 year of your surrender date.
What if you moved out of
North Carolina?
If you moved out of
North Carolina, you should turn your plates in to the NC
Department of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 448, Manteo, NC 27954
with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Send a copy of the
license surrender receipt you received from DMV and a copy
of your new state registration card to the Dare County Tax
Office for a possible prorated tax bill or refund, within 1
year of your surrender date.
What if you moved to
another County in North Carolina?
Tax is not prorated
between North Carolina counties. Your vehicle tax is due in
full to Dare County.
What has changed?
BASICALLY, the new
statute implemented on January 1, 1993, has changed the
way property tax is collected on registered motor
vehicles. These vehicles (cars, trucks, trailers,
motorcycles, and similar property) will no longer have to
be listed in January. Unregistered (untagged) motor
vehicles must still be listed annually in January and will
be billed with other personal property.
What do I do?
When you receive
your vehicle registration renewal card from the DMV,
please make sure your address and county are correct. If
the address and county are not correct, the DMV must be
notified so you are taxed by the proper county and
municipality.
How will I be
billed?
About three months
after your registration renewal, you will receive a bill
which is payable on the first day of the following month.
For example, if you have a March renewal, you will receive
the bill in June, it will be due on July 1st, and must be
paid by July 31st to avoid the addition of interest. You
will receive a separate tax bill on each registered
vehicle you own.
If I am billed
incorrectly?
You may get a bill
from a county or municipality in which you do not reside
at the time of registration renewal. If this were to
occur, you may go to either the county which billed you or
in the county which should have billed you in order to
correct the error. All incorrect billings should be
corrected within thirty (30) days.
If
I don't pay on time?
If taxes are
not paid on time enforced collection of taxes will begin
immediately upon the account reaching the delinquent status.
These legal actions may include, but are not limited to,
garnishment of wages, attachment of bank accounts and rents,
seizure and sale of personal property, or debt setoff.
Commencement of any of these actions will result in
additional costs and/or fees being added to the unpaid
bills.
A block will be set on your
vehicle registration.
If a vehicle receives a block, the registration cannot be
renewed again until the taxes, plus interest, have been
paid. Registration can only be renewed on a blocked
vehicle, after a paid tax receipt has been presented to
DMV.
How
do I appeal?
The valuation
of your motor vehicle may be appealed to the Special Motor
Vehicle Valuation Review Board. This is done in the same manner
as the valuation of your other property. The burden of
proof will remain with you, the taxpayer. By statute, a
valuation appeal must be completed within thirty (30) days
from the date the notice is prepared.
How do
I pay my tax bill?
Your vehicle tax
bill can be paid through mail by check or money order,
made payable to “Dare County Vehicle Tax”. Mail to PO
Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954. You may also pay in person at
the Dare County Justice Center located at 962 Marshall C.
