Emergency Medical Technician
Dare County operates 11 ambulances and 1 medivac helicopter out of 8 Stations
located throughout the County utilizing 24/48 shift staffing.
Applicants must be 18 years of age
with a High School diploma/GED and possess a valid Drivers
License. Must have appropriate NC-EMT certification and CPR;
ACLS, PALS, & BTLS required for ALS providers or be eligible for
legal recognition (“reciprocity”) by the NC Office of EMS.

be returned to the Human Resources Department.
New employees serve a twelve
month probationary period during which time his/her performance
and progress will be observed. Upon the successful completion of
the probationary period there is a 5% raise in salary.
Health Insurance for each
employee is currently provided by the County. Spouse and family
Insurance coverage is available for a $80 per month co-payment.
Insurance will become effective the first day of the month after
the employee has worked 30 days. (Example: If employee started
work on May 15, their insurance would become effective July 1.)
A $30,000 term life insurance policy effective the same date as
the Health and Dental Care Insurance.
Vacation and sick time is earned
at a rate of 11.2 hours monthly from the date of employment as
outlined in the Dare County Human Resources Personnel Ordinance.
Vacation and Sick Leave time, while it is being earned, is not
available for use during the first six months of employment.
Holidays are earned at a rate of
11.2 hours per holiday while employed. Holiday time is advanced
in six month increments as outlined in the Dare County EMS OPS
Manual and is available for use any time after employment
begins, subject to the date being available on the Leave
Calendar.
After five years of employment
with the County, the employee will receive a percentage of their
annual gross salary as a longevity pay bonus. This is paid once
a year after your anniversary date as stated below:

Retirement as outlined by the
North Carolina State and Local Government Retirement System.
The County pays an additional 5 %
of the employee’s base salary into an employee owned 401(k)
plan. The employee may add to their 401(k) account up to the
limits permitted by IRS rules.
Deferred Compensation is also
available for interested employees.
Any employee involved in outside
employment must report this, in writing, to his supervisor.
Outside employment should in no way interfere with the
employee's ability to perform his regular job.
ALS applicants must complete the
following:
- Documentation of continuing
education – prorated by the month and must be current before
ALS affiliation with Dare County
A positive letter of reference
from the EMS agency.- A positive letter of reference
from the agency’s ALS Program Medical Director and
successfully complete a Dare County practical skills
examination and written test.
Successfully complete a Dare
County scenario-based skills examination and written test.

Paramedic
Applicants will participate in a
program to provide 24 hr. emergency medical aid and assistance
to the general public. They must be knowledgeable of all phases
of emergency medical services; be responsible for specialized
emergency medical and emergency cardiac treatment; and operate
emergency life support equipment for the sick or injured prior
to arrival at a hospital.
ALS Providers are required to
complete a minimum of 36 hours of continuing education annually
and a total of 144 hours during the term of their certification
and must attend 4 Monthly CE Classes offered during an audit
period.
- ALS Providers shall maintain a
current ‘provider status’ in the following courses:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Complete 24 hours of On-Shift
Continuing Education during the fiscal year period.
- Attend 4 Monthly CE Classes offered during an fiscal
year.
- Attend the Mandatory Classes
required by departmental policy.
- Up to 48 hours per fiscal year
is compensable towards CE education.
EMT-P’s starting base salary is
$31,543 with overtime paid at “time-&-a-half” for all hours over
40 a week. Up to 48 hours per fiscal year is compensable towards
CE education.
Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate
ALS Providers are required to complete a minimum of 36 hours of continuing
education annually and a total of 144 hours during the term of their
certification and must attend 4 Monthly CE Classes offered during an audit
period. ALS Providers shall maintain a current ‘provider
status’ in the following courses:
- BTLS, CPR, & PEPP
- Basic Trauma Life Support
(Advanced)
- Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation
EMT-I’s starting base salary is
$28,664 with overtime paid at “time-&-a-half” for all hours over
40 a week. Up to 48 hours per fiscal year is compensable towards
CE education.
Emergency Medical Technician
BLS Providers are required to
complete a minimum of 36 hours of continuing education annually
and a total of 144 hours during the term of their certification
and must attend 4 Monthly CE Classes offered during an audit
period.
BLS Providers shall maintain a
current ‘provider status’ in the following courses:
- BTLS, CPR, & PEPP
- Basic Trauma Life Support
(Basic)
- Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation
EMT-B’s starting base salary is
$24,833 with overtime paid at “time-&-a-half” for all hours over
40 a week. Up to 48 hours per fiscal year is compensable towards
CE education. |
