Dare County EMS
operates Type III “Box” ambulances capable of transporting two patients
and EMS crew
members. Dare County also operates an EMS configured MMB BK117
helicopter, capable of transporting two patients and air crew members.
The staff of Dare County EMS are dedicated, professionals who function
at three certification levels; Paramedic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Basic.
Dare County benefits from an EMS system which provides Advanced Life
Support (ALS) to every emergency call. All Dare County EMS staff hold
certifications issued by the State of North Carolina. Paramedics must
also maintain current certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS),
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS).
All Dare County EMS staff must participate in an on-going continuing
education program.
Dare County EMS is activated by dialing 911. We encourage residents and
visitors to utilize the system. If you have any doubt about whether EMS
is needed, it is better to dial 911 and have us respond and assess the
patient. We are happy to respond anytime of day or night. Your call is
important to us and we are never too busy to respond to your need. Dare
County EMS provides emergency response to 911 calls anywhere in the
county. We also provide Critical Care transports from Outer Banks
Hospital to other medical facilities whenever the need arises. Patients
are transported by ambulance or the Dare MedFlight helicopter.
EMS staff are stationed at 8 facilities throughout the county. The
general public is welcome to stop by any EMS station for a routine blood
pressure check at no cost. The on-duty crew will be happy to check your
blood pressure, unless they are out of the building responding to a
call. However, IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A MEDICAL EMERGENCY - DIAL 911
instead of attempting to make the trip to an EMS station.
