The Dare County
Fire Marshal's Office, mandated under NC General
Statutes, coordinates firefighting and prevention
activities through contracts with area fire departments. The
office is the liaison between the county commissioners and
these departments.
The Fire Marshal conducts cause and origin investigations as
requested, performs required prevention inspections, sees
that remedial action is taken when necessary, and conducts
subsequent visits to see that recommendations have been
followed. The Fire Marshal reviews site plans,
making recommendations or changes whenever necessary, to see
that the plans are in agreement with current fire codes and
laws. The Fire Marshal's office coordinates and conducts
fire safety and fire prevention activities at our
area schools, county offices and community functions,
whenever needed. The office is responsible for the Fire
Safety Trailer, which is a portable classroom used as a
hands on training tool for all Dare County schools.
The department is charged with the task of enforcing codes
and laws designed to safeguard life, property and the public
welfare, from the hazards of fire, explosion and hazardous
substances, throughout a county population of roughly 32,000
citizens that often expands to 300,000 + during the summer
months.
Open burning permits are issued from this office, as
conditions and regulations allow. The permit does
NOT
relieve the permittee of his/her responsibility for
complying with all air pollution laws, regulations and
ordinances, or any damage the fire may cause to other
parties or their property. Good judgment should always be
used when burning, even though a permit has been obtained.
