The Information Technology Department is responsible for administering and maintaining various aspects of technology used in Dare County government. Their mission is to help the various departments and Dare County government as a whole to serve the public more efficiently through the use of appropriate technology.

Where once the department supported a single computer, an IBM mainframe, today they support over four hundred desktop computers in a Wide-Area-Network which connects offices from Duck to Hatteras. This network is the backbone for a Voice Over IP phone system that serves the majority of Dare County office locations, resulting in a considerable cost savings over a conventional phone system. The IT department supports application software used by various departments such as Tax, Finance, Planning and Health, and ensures the smooth operation of over a dozen servers. They handle the Geographical Information Systems data for the County, as well as the street numbering for the unincorporated areas. Information Technology maintains the Dare County web site which has become a popular source of information for the public.

The staff continually strives to keep abreast of the ever-changing technology field though formal training classes, self-study and regular contact with local, state and private industry IT professionals. They are always looking for ways to make technology work for Dare County.
