The Information Technology Department (I.T.) helps Dare County Government, and its Departments serve the public more efficiently through the use of appropriate technology.
Where once the Department supported a single IBM mainframe computer; today over five hundred desktop computers are supported in a Wide-Area-Network connecting County offices from Duck to Hatteras. This network is the backbone for a Voice Over IP phone system that serves the majority of Dare County office locations and represents a considerable cost savings over conventional phone systems.
The I.T. Department supports application software used by various departments such as Tax, Finance, Planning, and Health, and ensures the smooth operation of over a dozen servers. They also handle the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) data for the County, as well as street numbering in the unincorporated areas.
The Information Technology Departments maintains the Dare County website which has become a popular source of information for Dare County’s residents and visitors and includes timely updates during hurricanes and other disasters.
The Department’s staff strives to continually keep abreast of the ever-changing spectrum of modern technology. This is done though formal training classes, independent study, and networking with other local, state, and private industry I.T. professionals. Looking for new, innovative and cost effective ways to serve the people of Dare County is the mission of the Information Technology Department.
