Dare County Transportation Director Receives Employee of the Month

Don Cabana Don Cabana, Dare County Transportation System Director is the October 2012 Dare County Employee of the Month. Tim White, Public Services Director, presented Cabana with the award at the October 1, 2012 Board of Commissioners meeting.

Cabana began his career with Dare County in 2007 as Fleet Maintenance Tire Service Mechanic and was promoted to Solid Waste Management Specialist in 2008. In 2010, Cabana was hired as Transportation System Director. He is responsible for the county's transportation program, supervising 20 part-time drivers who provide transportation services to area residents. The transportation program provides door to door, ride by appointment service, based on availability with at least two days' notice to all residents and visitors of Dare County. It also provides transportation three days a week to medical centers in Virginia and North Carolina. For more information on the Dare County Transportation System, visit www.darenc.com.

"Don is a self-motivator. Any time I ask Don to do any type of research or provide me with figures, he immediately goes to task without question. He's the type of person that thinks outside the box," White commented during the presentation.

"An example of his motivation, Don obtained a $25,000 grant from the Outer Banks Hospital this year that will be used to pay for a driver for the homeless program that starts in November 2012. We will also be able to put additional drivers on the road because of his work securing funding. Don has also brought to the table ideas and programs that conserve fuel, allowing us to better save money and serve the residents of Dare County," said White.

Cabana remarked at his presentation, "It's been a pleasure working here for the last five years. I'm looking forward to continuing to reduce the county's expenses and increasing the number of residents who benefit from our programs."
