is responsible for land-use planning and building and fire inspections in the unincorporated portions of Dare County. This service area includes: Colington, Hatteras Island, Martin's Point, the mainland portions of Dare County, and areas of Roanoke Island outside the Manteo town limits.

Administration of subdivision and zoning ordinances is one of the many activities of the Planning Department, which also enforces state building codes, flood-plain administration, and the duties of the Dare County Fire Marshal.

The Planning Board, appointed by the Dare County Board of Commissioners, meets on a regular basis to consider issues of land-use planning in unincorporated Dare County. Building permits must be obtained from the appropriate inspection office for the geographical location of the construction project. A list of the three inspection offices, and the areas they serve, are listed below. Sub-permits for mechanical, plumbing, or electrical work may be obtained at any of the offices regardless of the construction location.

Planning office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Morning hours are generally reserved for permit issuance and plan review, with fieldwork and inspections performed in the afternoon. It is recommended you call the office to ensure the inspector will be available.
