ALL ABOUT FLUORIDE Fluoride is naturally present in all water. Community water fluoridation is the addition of fluoride to adjust the natural fluoride concentration of a community's water supply to the level recommended for optimal dental health, approximately 1.0 ppm (parts per million). The Maximum Contaminate Level (MCL) for Fluoride is 4.0 ppm. Fluorides are found mostly in groundwater as a natural constituent. At Dare County Water, the reverse osmosis membranes used for treatment removes any naturally occurring Fluoride so it is added to the finished water with a chemical feed system. The maximum Fluoride that these chemical feed pumps can produce is below the MCL for Fluoride. All of the Dare County Water Treatment Facilities are required to send a monthly sample to the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health for analysis. All of the results of the Fluoride samples sent to the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health can be viewed by going to the following web site: http://204.211.171.13/EnvironmentalSciences/Inorganic/TestResult.asp Follow these instructions when you have entered the website above.
This will bring up all of the fluoride analysis that the State Laboratory has performed on samples taken at the Dare County Water Treatment Facilities. Fluoride Links (some links contain information which show both views) Page last updated March 8, 2005
