JOSEPH " MAC" MIDGETT
WATER PLANT LAB
The Joseph "Mac" Midgett Water Plant has a small laboratory using state of the art lab equipment. This lab
is specifically set up for bacteriological and physical
chemical testing.
This lab uses the presence/absence method for determining total
and fecal coliform bacteria. The type of presence/absence method
used is the Colilert method for total and fecal coliforms. With
the use of this test, coliform bacteria can be detected in as
little as 24 hours.
Samples must be taken from selected sites in the
distribution system and analyzed for bacteria content. The number of analyses
required depends on the size of the system. This
water system serves a population of approximately 2,085 and is
considered a small water system. Therefore, it is required to
run two bacteriological samples per month.
The lab performs numerous physical and chemical
analysis on different waters. Analyses are performed on raw
water, finished water, distributed water, permeate water,
concentrate water, concentrate receiving water and as a service
to the public our lab will do a residential analyses upon
request. Our concentrate discharge is analyzed according to an NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) permit.
The following is a list of lab equipment used for
testing.
- Laboratory Fume Head
- This item is used for the protection of lab
personnel from hazardous fumes, vapors, odors, particles and
contaminants.
- Hot Air Oven
- The Hot Air Oven is used for dry content analysis,
glassware drying and dry sterilization.
- Desiccator Cabinet
-
This cabinet is used for absorbing moisture and
ensuring that moisture sensitive sample remain safe without constant
monitoring. -
INCUBATOR AND METTLER SCALE
Lab Incubator
- This instrument is used for bacteriological tests,
it maintains a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius and maintains it
throughout the test.
Lab Refrigerator
- This refrigerator is used to store any lab items
that are high temperature sensitive such as media and organisms.
- Analytical Balance
- This scale is used for exact weighing and measuring
of filters used for dry content analysis.
- Hach DR / 4000V Spectrophotometer
- This lab instrument has pre-programmed procedures
and storage capability for customer calibrations, it speeds analyses
of a wide range of samples suited for routine analysis as well as
unique experiments, The DR/4000 V is capable of automatically
carrying out multiple scans for kinetics or other research projects
and is capable of performing hundreds of water quality tests. The
DR/4000 V has visible spectrum capabilities, with a range of 320 to
1100 NM. Samples can be measured at multiple wavelengths in rapid
succession, with up to four different wavelength measurements in one
operation. The DR/4000 V has 130 pre-programmed Hach methods that
are permanently stored in non-volatile memory or it can store up to
200 of our own calibrations.
- Hach EC40 Benchtop pH/ISE Meter
- This instrument is used for measuring the pH of a
solution. This pH meter stores up to four calibrations (two for pH
and two for ion concentration) in a non-volatile memory.
- Hach CO 150 Conductivity Meter
- This meter measures conductivity/salinity/TDS/Temperature
of a solution. This meter provides a read-out of conductivity to
199.9 mS, Salinity to 80 ppt and Total Dissolved Solids to 19,900
mg/l.
-
- Free and Total Chlorine Pocket Colormeters
- A hand held filter photometer, dedicated to
measuring a single parameter, in our case, free and total chlorine.
