STUMPY POINT RO PLANT LAB

The Dare County Stumpy Point Plant lab has a small laboratory using state of the art lab equipment. This lab is specifically set up for our bacteriologicals (from the production system) and physical chemical testing. All compliance bacteriologicals (from the distribution system) are performed at the Dare County Water certified lab located at the North Reverse Osmosis plant.

The lab uses the presence/absence method for determining total and fecal coliform bacteria. The type of presence/absence method used is the Colilert method for total and fecal coliforms. With the use of this testing method, coliform bacteria determinations can be made within 24 to 28 hours. Coliform bacteria can be detected within hours, determinations of negative detection can be made with 24 to 28 hours, as opposed to longer time spans with the multiple tube or MFT methods.

Samples must be taken from selected sites in the Stumpy Point Distribution System and analyzed for bacteria content. The number of analyses required depends on the size of the system. The Stumpy Point water system serves a population of approximately 400 and is considered a small water system. Therefore, we are required to run one bacteriological sample per month.

The Stumpy Point Plant lab performs numerous physical and chemical analysis on different waters. Analyses are performed on raw water, finished water, distributed water, permeate water, concentrate water, concentrate receiving water and as a service to the public our lab will do a residential analyses upon request. Our concentrate discharge is analyzed according to an NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) permit.

Lab Equipment

 Hach DR 4000

This is a microprocessor-operated laboratory instrument pre-programmed with calibrations for most water management test requirements.

 Lab Refrigerator

This refrigerator is used to store our lab reagents.  This ensures that they remain fresh until they are needed.

 Lab Incubator

This instrument is used for bacteriological tests; it maintains a constant temperature of 35 degrees Celsius.

 Hach SensIon 156 Multiparameter Meter

This portable meter is used for a number of tests.  It is capable of doing pH, temperature, conductivity and salinity.

HF Scientific DRT – 15CE Turbidimeter

The turbidimeter detects light and provides an electrical signal that is proportional to the turbidity of the liquid.
