Extended Power Outage on Hatteras Island Prompts Water Conservation Alert

Post Date:07/27/2017 2:16 p.m.

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) experienced a power fault at Oregon Inlet early this morning, leaving all Hatteras Island customers without power. Currently, the villages of Buxton and Frisco are being temporarily powered via diesel generators. Residents and visitors in these areas are asked to TURN OFF their air conditioning and conserve usage. Additional portable generators are en route to the island.

There are no impacts to roads or bridges in the County. Some delays were experienced  this morning while one lane of traffic on the Bonner Bridge was closed near the north end to allow power crews to access and inspect electrical lines.

Due to the power outage, the Dare County Water Department has issued a water conservation alert for Hatteras Island customers. Residents and visitors are asked to take special measures to conserve water as much as possible because water production capacity is diminished due to the power outage. There are no concerns about the quality of water being provided – it is safe to drink.

To reduce fire risk during a power outage, use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles. Remember that portable generators should only be used outdoors.

Dare County Emergency Management is working with various federal, state and local partners to provide assistance to Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and access necessary resources.

All Dare County services remain available. If emergency assistance is needed, dial 911.
