On June 20, 2016, members of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, Dare County staff, representatives from Tyrrell and Hyde Counties, and staff from the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company signed the final steel beam that was put into place on what will be the new Regional Emergency Communications Center and Dare County Emergency Operations Center.
Located on Airport road in Manteo, the 18,200 square foot facility will be home to a new regional public safety facility delivering 911 communication services for the three counties; Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell, as well as administrative offices for Dare County Emergency Management and Dare County EMS.
By consolidating 911 communications services for the three counties, the project was eligible for grant funding from the state's E911 fund, which contributed over half of the approximate $14.1 million cost of the project.
The new facility is expected to open and begin operations in April of 2017.
