A dedication ceremony for the Marshall and Gussie Collins Walkway will be held on Monday, November 20 at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to join the Dare County Board of Commissioners on this occasion to honor the remarkable African-American couple that owned and farmed the land surrounding the walkway and government complex.
According to historian David Stick, “Marshall Claude Collins was a native and lifelong resident of Roanoke Island, a man widely liked and highly respected, and a leader in his community.” Descendants of Marshall and Gussie Collins will share memories of their ancestors during the ceremony and the Echoes of Heritage will perform several musical selections.
The walkway is open for the public to enjoy and extends approximately two miles from the Dare County Government Complex in Manteo to the Coastal Studies Institute in Skyco, meandering through scenic woodlands and along the marsh. It is a wonderful way for families to discover a beautiful part of Roanoke Island.
The dedication ceremony will be held at the south end of the parking area adjacent to the Dare County Center located at 950 Marshall C. Collins Road in Manteo. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside the Dare County Center. Mark your calendar and plan to attend.
