Woodard and Overman Re-elected to Serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman
By statute, the Election of Chairman and Vice Chairman occurs annually on the Board’s first meeting in December. Chairman Bob Woodard and Vice Chairman Wally Overman were re-elected to serve their fourth consecutive year serving in these roles.
Holiday Cheer Provided by the Manteo High School Concert Choir
The Manteo High School Concert Choir, directed by Becki Rea (RAY), provided holiday cheer by performing a special offering of musical selections.
Revised Winter Trash Collection Schedule
At its last meeting, Commissioners tabled discussion of a pilot program to revise the winter trash collection schedule in unincorporated Dare County so that additional information could be developed by staff. Following discussion of the analysis prepared by staff, the Board agreed that at this time the potential cost savings does not warrant changing the existing trash collection schedule.
Voter Referendum for Hatteras Village
At the request of the Hatteras Village Community Center District, Commissioners approved a resolution calling for an election in the Hatteras voting precinct for the issue of authorizing the District to expand the uses of the ad valorem taxes for multi-use pathways around the village of Hatteras. The election will be held in 2018.
Cycling Ride to Benefit Local Charities
Local cyclists Jim Ebert, Rita Ayers (AIRS) and Jack McCombs will embark on a 3,600 mile bike ride to demonstrate the benefits of vigorous exercise while also raising funds for local non-profits that help cancer victims, caregivers, and families as well as the American Cancer Society.
Update on Economic Development
Bob Peele, Chairman of the Outer Banks Chamber and Karen Brown, President presented an update regarding the Chamber’s progress in initiating the first phase of the County’s Economic Development and Diversification Strategic Plan.
Department of Health and Human Services Annual Report
Jay Burrus, Chuck Lycett (LI-SET)and Sheila Davies presented the 2016-17 Department of Health and Human Services Annual Report that includes extensive data about the vital services provided by the Department last year. To review the report, visit darenc.com/hhsar2017.
Child Telepsychiatry Update
Public Health Director Sheila Davies reported that a partnership between Dare County, Surf Pediatrics and Medicine, and Brody School of Medicine at ECU will enable a child psychiatrist to be available 4 hours per week beginning Thursday, December 7. Referrals will come from Surf Pediatrics and Medicine’s providers based on the identified needs of established patients. Dare County is providing funding to cover gaps between billing collections and provider fees.
Tourism Board Plans to Purchase Property
Commissioners consented to a request from the Dare County Tourism Board to spend up to $715,000 from the Tourism Board’s Long Term Restricted Fund to acquire property in Nags Head that will provide overflow parking and supplemental utility for the Soundside Event Site.
Dare County Tax Assessors Win Statewide Awards
Dare County Tax Assessor Greta Skeen was recently awarded the North Carolina Association of Assessing Officers (NCAAO) Assessor of the Year Award in recognition of outstanding achievement in tax administration and public service. Hosea (HO-zée) Wilson, Assistant Assessor, was awarded the NCAAO President’s Recognition for Outstanding Contributions to Assessment Administration Award for outstanding contributions to further the cause of NCAAO and the assessing profession.
Public Relations Employee Recognized for Outstanding Work
Public Relations Specialist Sara Small was recognized for her efforts developing Dare County’s Hurricane Preparedness Guide, winner of the 2017 International Association of Emergency Managers Public Awareness Award for Division 1. In addition to hard copy distribution, the guide is available online and content was made part of the county’s ongoing social media campaign to improve hurricane awareness and readiness.
