At 5 PM the National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Warning for areas south of Oregon Inlet, including all Hatteras Island communities. A tropical storm warning means tropical wind conditions are expected somewhere in the warning area within the next 36 hours.

Winds are forecast to reach 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon. Residents and visitors should prepare for these winds by securing outside items to reduce projectile hazards. As wind builds, seek shelter and stay away from windows and doors. Winds could damage porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects may be blown about. Limbs may be broken off trees with a few snapped or uprooted.

Currently there is no forecasted threat of storm surge inundation but surf conditions will be rough with some beach erosion and strong rip currents possible.

Flooding rain is expected with 2 to 4 inches and some locally higher amounts that could lead to flash flooding on roadways. Travel should be limited during periods of heavy rain.

To ensure safety of County employees, Hatteras Island garbage collection scheduled for Tuesday, June 7 is postponed until Wednesday, June 8. Hatteras Island customers are asked to keep their cans secured --- do not place them beside the road until after the storm has passed.

Dare County offices on Hatteras Island will be closed on Tuesday and will reopen on Wednesday morning at 8:30 AM The primary election will proceed as planned. Election workers should report to their precincts as scheduled.
