Residents and Visitors Asked to Closely Monitor Tropical Storm Colin

Post Date:06/06/2016 9:00 a.m.
The latest forecast from the National Weather Service shows Tropical Storm Colin tracking slightly closer to Dare County. Colin is an unorganized storm and significant uncertainties remain in its exact track and thus the local impacts. Dare County residents and visitors are asked to closely monitor the storm and be prepared to take actions should the risk of impacts increase.

A tropical storm warning is in place for coastal waters from Oregon Inlet south. Mariners are urged to exercise extreme caution and remain in port during tropical storm conditions.

No tropical storm watch or warning is in effect for land areas at this time due to the strongest forecast winds being southeast of the center of the storm and off of the coast. Keep in mind that this could change quickly.

Currently, the main impacts on land will be heavy rainfall that could result in flash flooding of low lying areas along and just inland from the coast. A flash flood watch has been issued. Roadways can quickly flood and become hazardous. Timing for potential flooding impacts would be this evening into Tuesday afternoon.

Currently wind impacts on land are anticipated to be minor and limited to the immediate coast. Loose objects prone to blowing around should be secured.

Rip current risk will be moderate today, likely increasing to high on Tuesday once the storm tracks off the coast.

Water level rises will be minor across the southern Pamlico Sound, perhaps a foot or two of rise above normal.
