Dare County Water Department
The Dare County water system is operating normally. Dare County water is safe to drink and does not need to be boiled.
Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative
At 12:00 noon the power was de-energized for Hatteras Village & Ocracoke Island so that CHEC crews can replace the broken transmission pole between Hatteras & Frisco. It will take approximately 4 hours to complete the work. Thank you again for your patience during this restoration effort.
Disaster Relief Information
Anyone in need of assistance should contact the Dare County Department of Health and Human Services, Social Services Division at 475-5500 for those north of the Bonner Bridge and 475-9320 for Hatteras Island.
The Outer Banks Community Foundation is coordinating all monetary donations. At this time monetary donations are the greatest help to those in need rather than donations of clothing and other goods., Donations can be made online at www.obxdisaster.org, or mailed to the Outer Banks Community Foundation at 13 Skyline Road, Southern Shores, NC 27949. Please write “Disaster Relief” in the check memo line.
Debris clean-up contractors are being mobilized. Additional information will be provided in future updates.
Damage assessments are now being done. Dare County is working with the State of North Carolina to provide information to ensure that everything necessary is in place to pursue FEMA disaster assistance. If you have damage or loss from this disaster, complete a FEMA application now to speed up the process once eligibility for assistance has been determined. Food and Nutrition Services Update
Anyone who is currently receiving Food and Nutrition Services and experience a food loss, must contact Dare County Health & Human Services’ Social Service Division at 252.475.5500 by October 18, 2016 and request a replacement of benefits.
Dare County Department of Health & Human Services is in contact daily with state partners regarding disaster Food and Nutrition Services Program, if the status for Dare County changes information will be issued immediately.
National Park Service
The National Park Service reports that Wright Brothers National Memorial has reopened. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site will reopen at 1 pm today, although some trails remain closed. The Oregon Inlet Campground will open at 12:00 pm today. The Bodie Island Visitor Center and ORV Permit Office will open at 1 pm today. The NPS boat ramp by the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, and Coquina Beach are open. All Cape Hatteras National Seashore services and facilities on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands remain closed to visitors. Assessments, repairs, and clean-up continue at all three park sites. As this work is completed, services and facilities will continue to reopen. Please check the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Facebook page for openings of ORV access ramps to vehicles.
Town of Southern Shores
Trash Collection on select streets rescheduled –
Due to continued standing water in areas of town the following streets were unable to receive trash services Tuesday October 11, 2016:
- All of the Avenues
- Streets North of Dogwood Trail on Ocean Boulevard
These streets are planned to be serviced on the next scheduled trash collection on Monday October 17, 2016.

There are no restrictions for areas north of Oregon Inlet.
Restricted Access Remains for All Areas of Hatteras Island
Access is limited to residents, non-resident property owners and non-resident employees of businesses with proper reentry passes.
