Tropical Storm Hermine Will Bring Substantial Rain and Heavy Wind

While Tropical Depression #8 passed off our coast earlier this week without impact, Dare County Emergency Management is asking residents and visitors to pay close attention to Tropical Storm Hermine as it heads our way after making landfall in Florida. While the exact tract of the storm may change, Dare County is likely to experience substantial rain and heavy wind as the system moves through the area this weekend.

Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive late Friday or early Saturday and continue through Saturday afternoon. Go ahead and secure loose outdoor items before the strong winds arrive. Now is the time to ensure your emergency kit is properly stocked and your emergency plan is reviewed.

Widespread rainfall of 5 to 8 inches is anticipated with isolated amounts of up to 10 inches.
Prolonged heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding. These conditions make travel hazardous, especially along NC 12 and other roadways prone to flooding. Travelers should check the weather forecast before leaving home. Motorists are advised to use caution and anticipate delays.

The threat of rip currents will remain high through the weekend indicating that the surf is dangerous for all levels of swimmers.
