Dare County Emergency Management is the lead role in preparing for and directing response to major emergencies and disasters , both natural and man-made within Dare County. The Department of Emergency Management is the local community based equivalent of the NC Division of Emergency Management Agency at the State level and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at the Federal level. It works closely with all agencies (public & private) before, during and after emergencies/disasters to provide the coordination of comprehensive protection of lives and property. 

Dare County Emergency Management has a full-time staff that receives specialized training in many varied fields. Like other public safety officials, staff members serve the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Delayed Opening for County Offices and Garbage Collection on Thursday

Due to the approaching winter storm and potential impacts, opening of all Dare County offices and facilities will be delayed until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 18.

Dare County Public Works will assess road conditions on Thursday morning to determine whether service can safely be provided for customers in Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. Again, this will be contingent on road conditions and if provided, pick-ups will be delayed.   

All court sessions scheduled for Dare County on Thursday, January 18 have been cancelled. New court dates will be set and notifications for the new court dates will be mailed on Monday, January 22. All Dare County Libraries will close at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17.

Dare County Transportation has cancelled all scheduled service for Thursday, January 18.
