Social Worker III Receives Employee of the Month
- Contact Dare County Public Relations
Ashley Jackson, Social Worker III, in the Social Services Division of the Department of Health & Human Services, is the December 2016 Dare County Employee of the Month. Health & Human Services Director, Jay Burrus, presented Jackson with the award at the December 5, 2016 Board of Commissioners meeting.
Jackson was hired in 2009 and has worked for the Social Services Division since beginning her career with Dare County. Jackson was nominated by Emergency Management Director, Drew Pearson for her excellent work on Hatteras Island following Hurricane Matthew.
“Before Hurricane Matthew, even with its projected path, and without being asked, Ashley and staff in Social Services made contact with individuals on Hatteras Island enrolled in the Special Medical Needs Registry. Following the storm, most individuals had been contacted and followed up with by Sunday,” said Burrus during the presentation.
“Ashley lives in Hatteras Village. Her first floor and living areas were flooded due to Hurricane Matthew. She and her family had to leave their home and go stay with family. Ashley set aside her personal needs and went to work despite the flooding in her house,” remarked Burrus.
After a storm, social workers turn their focus to the aftermath but it’s important to point out that their regular work also continues. In the days following Hurricane Matthew, Ashley was on call and one night around 10 p.m. she received a call regarding a crisis situation involving a child. She worked until about 6 a.m. the following morning and then had to drive to Manteo for a work-related court appearance. She did all this despite her home being flooded. Ashley’s dedication to Dare County is admirable.
