Emily Gould, Program Coordinator, with the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center, is the February 2017 Dare County Employee of the Month. Baum Center Director, Brandi Rheubottom, presented Gould with the award at the February 6, 2017 Board of Commissioners meeting.
Gould was hired in August 2009 as the Program Coordinator for the Dare County Center in Manteo and transferred to the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center in Kill Devil Hills in December 2010.
“Emily is a multi-faceted employee. She is someone we can depend on and is an absolute joy to work with. It’s very seldom you have an employee who comes to you wanting more tasks and asking for more work but Emily is always wanting to learn more,” said Rheubottom.
Gould balances a variety of roles at the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center. She organizes recreational and social activities for Baum Center patrons, is the co-coordinator for the Outer Banks Senior Games, as well as the coordinator for the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). The SHIIP program helps seniors and caregivers navigate the complicated world of health insurance and Medicare. It provides volunteer counselors who help Medicare recipients pick the best coverage option based on their health needs and finances.
As the SHIIP coordinator, Emily recruits volunteer counselors here in Dare County, organizes quarterly training sessions for these volunteers and new volunteer orientations, facilitates counseling sessions for the seniors, provides information to the public regarding the program and arranges education and outreach activities.
“Emily does a wonderful job interacting with a variety of people in her role as SHIIP coordinator. This includes seniors, volunteers, state employees and even elected officials. You can tell Emily really cares about her job and our seniors,” remarked a coworker during the nomination process.
