Phone Scam Alert Update and Re-Post
Update and Re-Post:
The Scammers are “spoofing” the Sheriff’s Office phone number (252) 475-5980, using a retired deputy's name or saying they are a telecommunicator and claiming you need pay over the phone or send money.
The Sheriff’s Office will not ask you for payment over the phone, nor ask you to obtain another form of payment to be sent electronically.
The Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of citizens receiving scam phone calls from subjects claiming the people owe money (for various different reasons) and they are to pay immediately to avoid a warrant being issued and/or arrested.
The caller wants the person to pay via a credit card over the phone or to go and get a type of ‘money gram’ or other electronic payment and send it electronically.
The Sheriff's Office is also receiving complaints of the IRS requesting social security numbers and payment over the phone. Do not give any personal information or make payments.
Please do not send money or funds to the callers. You may contact us with any questions. Office (252) 475-5980 email: Sheriff@darenc.com and www.darenc.com/sheriff
