Dare County has received notice of the availability of Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) funds for the elevation of homes in unincorporated Dare County. The FMA program provides funding to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings and structures insurable under the National Flood Insurance Program. If you are a year-round resident of unincorporated Dare County and your property has experienced repetitive flooding, federal funding may be available to elevate your home to mitigate flood losses. For those residents in one of the towns, you should contact the appropriate town agency to inquire about their participation in the application process.
The FMA program places a strong emphasis on Severe Repetitive Loss and Repetitive Loss properties. In order to be eligible for FMA grant funds, property owners should have an active flood insurance policy on their structure and occupy the structure as a year-round resident of Dare County.
Structures that are designated by NFIP as severe repetitive loss may qualify for 100% federal funding for elevation of the structure. Structures designated by NFIP as repetitive loss structures may qualify for funding at a ratio of 90% federal funding and 10% property owner match for elevation of the structure. All other structures may qualify for funding at a ratio of 75% federal funding and 25% property owner match for elevation of the structure.
Interested property owners should contact Donna Creef at the Dare County Planning Department at 252-475-5873 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss the full list of criteria for this FMA grant program and to request an application. All applications must be received by Dare County by the close of business on December 17, 2018.
