Dare County Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Program kicks off Monday, June 17. The Summer Reading Program is free, flexible and fun for children of all ages. The program rewards children who read a total of thirty days during the summer by awarding them a new free book of their choice. Children may stop by the library this summer any time it is open to register for the program and record their reading achievements.
This year’s Summer Reading Program theme is “A UNIVERSE OF STORIES!” and many fun and exciting programs have been planned. A grand prize drawing will be held at each one of the Dare County Libraries at the end of the program.
Beginning July 7, weekly themed programs are scheduled at all three library locations. Special programs include visits from The Balloon Lady, Magician Hunter Rhodes, The North Carolina Aquarium, ScienceTellers, Lost Colony’s Children’s Theater and a Star Lab planetarium experience. Please note, space is limited for the planetarium experience and pre-registration is required. To register, contact your library location on or after June 17.
Preschool age children are invited to enroll in a special Summer Reading Program just for them, designed to improve their reading and listening skills. Parents can track the books they read with their preschoolers. The children will receive a sticker for each day they read or are read to on their reading log.
Parents can rest easy knowing the Summer Reading Program is educational and will help children maintain the reading skills they developed throughout the school year, so they are better prepared to enter the classroom once again in the fall. A calendar of events for each library location is available at www.darenc.com/summerreading.
Major funding for the 2019 Summer Reading Program comes from The Dare County Library Foundation, www.darecountylibraryfoundation.org. The mission of the Dare County Library Foundation is to improve the quality of services that the Dare County Library provides to the community by securing resources to support library programs and projects not normally met by public funding.
