Post Date:09/20/2019 2:38 PM

Beginning Monday, September 23, Hatteras Island residents needing assistance with cleaning up their home or property can request assistance at the North Carolina Baptist Men Recovery Site located at the former PNC Bank Building at 47013 NC Hwy 12 in Buxton. Individuals who cannot get to the recovery site can call 252.489.9189.

Residents who rent a home on Hatteras Island and need assistance with cleaning up the home or property can request assistance at the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services offices in Frisco. Individuals who cannot get to the offices can call 252.475.9320.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members are on-site at the Frisco Fire Department to distribute cleaning supplies. Please follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/hicert for updates on their hours of operation.

Individuals in other parts of Dare County who need assistance because of damage from Dorian may contact Interfaith Community Outreach at 252.480.0070.

Food and Nutrition Services recipients who suffered a food loss during Hurricane Dorian have until September 30 to request replacement benefits. Recipients need to contact Social Services Division at 252.475.5500 and ask to speak to a worker in the Food and Nutrition Services Unit. At this time, we have no information about Disaster Food Stamps.

Dare County would like to recognize the many volunteer organizations active in disaster response that sent coordinators, support teams, and volunteers to support the initial recovery efforts across the county.  While many organizations provided assistance, the steadfast and rapid response by the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the North Carolina Baptist on Mission, the Salvation Army, Operation Blessing, and the American Red Cross, brought resources from across the region to support local efforts in Dare County.

With those resources, the Dare County Social Services Division staff worked side by side with many local volunteer organizations including the Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men, Hatteras, Frisco and Avon Volunteer Fire Departments, the Hatteras Island Community Emergency Response Team, Coastal Family Church, and Interfaith Community Outreach to establish disaster intake centers to meet the initial needs of residents impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

Countless people and organizations have taken the time or provided support to help our residents, especially the Hatteras Island community, as they start the recovery process. The overwhelming generosity and the “get it done” approach of the Dare County community delivered the hands-on support and supplies that many families needed to start moving forward as they begin the recovery process. To date, that collective effort has assisted or completed projects for nearly 500 families, ranging from simple yard clean up work to complete home remediation.
