Governor’s Volunteer Service Award Recipients Honored
Three individuals and one group were presented with the 2017 Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service at the April 17, 2017 meeting of the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
Emmett Smith, Dare County Emergency Management Logistics Coordinator. Mr. Smith will further be awarded the Governor’s Medallion Award at an upcoming presentation in Raleigh.
Karin Edmond, Dare County Center Nutrition Site, Kitchen Assistant and Crochet Teacher.
Darnel Talbert, Dare County Center, Van Driver, Senior and Disabled Person Assistant, Fitness Room Helper and Toy Drive and Santa Visit Volunteer.
The Outer Banks Repeater Association, a group of volunteers that provide emergency communication services that require well trained volunteer radio operators willing to work 24/7 to help their community under demanding conditions.
Dredging Scheduled for the Connecting Channel at Hatteras Inlet
Vice Chairman Wally Overman reported that dredging for the Connecting Channel at Hatteras Inlet is scheduled to begin between April 20 and April 26. Survey work has begun to provide exact locations and total amounts of sand that will need to be removed from the channel once dredging begins.
Zoning Text Amendment Approved
Following a public hearing, Commissioners approved a zoning text amendment to allow residential use in conjunction with a commercial use to the list of permitted uses in the Commercial Services (CS) district.
After receiving a petition from property owners along Flowers Ridge Road in Buxton describing the road’s dire condition, Commissioners approved a resolution of support that will be forwarded to NCDOT.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Thursday, April 27 to present a design modification to the Design-Build contract that has been proposed at the southerly landfall of the bridge over the Pamlico Sound between N.C. 12 in the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Rodanthe. The meeting is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center located at 23186 Myrna Peters Road in Rodanthe.
Representatives from NC DOT will attend the Commissioners meeting on May 1 to present information about their proposal to widen and straighten Colington Road. A multi-use path is included as part of the design.
