Commissioners Approve Tethering Ordinance for Dogs

In an effort to safeguard humane treatment for animals, Commissioners approved an ordinance that establishes regulations for the tethering of dogs in the unincorporated areas of Dare County. The ordinance presented to the Board by Commissioner Ross makes it unlawful for a dog to be restrained or tethered for more than three hours in a 24-hour period.

Skyco Community Walkway Named in Honor of Marshall and Gussie Collins

Commissioners voted to name the new walkway in the Skyco community in honor of Marshall and Gussie Collins, the previous owners of the land where the walkway, and also the  County’s Justice Center and Administration Building are located. Marshall and Gussie Collins were lifelong residents of Roanoke Island, where they lived and farmed their property for many years and later helped Dare County acquire their land for public purposes. Joan Collins, speaking on behalf of the descendents of Marshall and Gussie Collins, said “This is an important way to recognize this very special African American family who are so much a part of the fabric of this community - a remarkable couple indeed, and who incidentally lived in the Skyco Community and walked the very same footsteps of those using the walkway today.”  The walkway extends from the Visitors Center to Toler Road and picks up again at Skyco Road.

Merging of Chicamacomico and Salvo Fire Departments

Commissioners approved a contract with the Chicamacomico Banks Fire Department to provide service in the Salvo Fire District. This follows a presentation to the Board earlier this year regarding the merger of two departments to enhance fire protection services for the communities of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo. The merger process has been underway for a couple of years and was approved at the annual meeting for the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department last month. The Board also approved the new Chicamacomico Fire Insurance District reflecting the merger.
