Post Date:01/08/2016 8:30 a.m.
Elmer Midgett, Chairman of the Dare County Planning Board, was honored by the Dare County Board of Commissioners at their January 4 meeting in a surprise ceremony. Joining the Board in recognizing Mr. Midgett were his wife Gail, daughter Whitney and son-in-law Representative Paul Tine, and Planning Director Donna Creef. Members of the Dare County Planning Board were also present for the tribute to Mr. Midgett.

Chairman Robert Woodard read a Resolution on behalf of the Board of Commissioners that described how Dare County has developed and grown under the careful eye and insightful leadership of Elmer Midgett as Chairman of the Dare County Planning Board. Chairman Woodard described Midgett as a treasured native son who graduated from Manteo High School and distinguished himself as a United States Marine Corps Officer in Vietnam before returning home to Dare County.

In addition to the Dare County Resolution, Representative Tine presented Midgett the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, signed by Governor Pat McCrory. This award is among the most prestigious of State honors and is conferred to an individual by the Governor for exemplary service to North Carolina and to their community. Representative Tine applauded Midgett for his County service and for his involvement spanning two decades with the North Carolina Insurance Underwriters Association. Tine also spoke of Midgett's kindness to those in need and how he offered help to many in a generous but quiet way.

Midgett has served on Dare County's Planning Board since it was first established in 1975 and as Chairman since 1982. For over 40 years, he has attended Planning Board meetings, workshops, and hearings in an effort to advise the Dare County Board of Commissioners in matters of planning for the unincorporated areas of the County.
