The Dare County Library has many free print and electronic resources for students in grades K-12. Our electronic resources such as databases and eBooks can be accessed from home or school year-round.

Books for Dare County Schools Summer Reading Programs are available at the Dare County Library.

 

Battle of the Books and Dare County Schools summer reading list books are available for free at the Dare County Library with a Dare County Library card. Library borrowers can access both print books and eBooks.

Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl style competition sponsored by The North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) and held locally by many Dare County Schools. Students across the state read books from a list selected by NCSLMA. Dare County Schools holds a local competition where students answer specific, detailed questions about the books. Whichever school’s team wins goes on to regional competitions with other counties, then state.

Battle of the Books titles are carefully selected and are great reading choices for children whether they are participating in the Battle of the Books program or not.

How to request a Dare County Schools reading program print book from your Dare County Library

At this time, due to the COVID-19 closure, if you would like to request a print copy you can place a hold request by calling your library branch or go to the Online Catalog at earlibrary.org and use your library card number and PIN. When the book is available, library staff will call you to schedule an appointment for you to come to the library and use the curbside pick up service.

How to access and request a Dare County Schools reading program eBook from Dare County Library eResources

Go to the Virtual Library at darenc.com/VirtualLibrary for information about using CloudLibrary and NC Kids Digital Library.

CloudLibrary allows holds on books if a copy is out. Look for the Elementary School, Middle School, and High School Battle of the Books 2020-2021 ribbons featured on the CloudLibrary homepage. You can search books by title also.

NC Kids Digital Library has eBooks available through grade 4. It has multiple copies available but does not allow holds.

NOTEKitty Hawk Elementary School reading programs include the Summer Reading List, the Early Elementary School Battle of the Books and the NC Elementary School Battle of the Books.  

 

BOOK COLLECTION

Juvenile Fiction & Non-Fiction

Fiction

For children in elementary and middle school, we have almost 11,000 stories and novels for you to browse. The Dare County Libraries also offer many titles from both the "Battle of the Books", "Fiction Diggers!" and "Accelerated Reader" school reading programs.

Non-Fiction

Our children's non-fiction collection supports school report needs and is also intended for recreational reading pertaining to children's hobbies and interests.

Additionally, books and other library materials from all eight libraries in the East Albemarle Regional Library System are available for you to borrow. Ask library staff how you can request that a book be sent to your closest library using our free delivery service.

Teen Collection

Age appropriate fiction and non-fiction books located in a separate teen area providing teens their own area of the library. We recognize that 13-16 year olds have unique reading needs for education, entertainment and enlightenment.

A Dare County Library account provides access to eBooks, digital magazines, databases and more! These resources can be accessed 24/7 from any internet-capable device with internet access. If you are a student and don't have a library card, you can complete the form below and receive via email a library card number and PIN (Personal Identification Number) that will allow you to access our digital resources.

eBooks for Children

The Dare County Library offers three separate platforms for children's eBooks:


 

 

TumbleBook Library offers over 1,100 simultaneous-use titles for preschoolers through grade 6. Access with your 14-digit library card number. There are also non-fiction titles and puzzles and games that are available for numerous TumbleBook Library titles.  

Cloud Library offeres popular eBooks and eAudiobooks for children in preschool through Grade 12. For eAudiobooks, look for the eAudiobook bookshelf or headphone icon on the cover. eBooks can be read on your tablet, smart phone or computer. Cloud Library titles are single use, meaning only one person can have a title out at a time. Titles can be placed on hold. You must first download the Cloud Library App to your device/ Access with your 14-digit library card number and PIN (Personal Identification Number). Click here to access Cloud Library.

NC KIDS Digital Library offers over 5,000 titles for preschool through Grade 4. There are 1,000 titles for simultaneous use, meaning multiple people can have them out at the same time - look for the "never-ending reading" shelf.  Access with your 14-digit library card number and PIN (Personal Identification Number). Unite for LiteracyUnite for Literacy - eBook Collection

Free digital library of picture books narrated in English or several other languages. Great for Pre-K through Grade 3.

Change the screen text from English to Spanish. No holds or waiting, available to more than one borrower at a time.

DIGITAL LOCAL HISTORY

Dare County local history is available using the Dare County Digital Heritage Collection and includes:

Dare County Times (1935-1945) and The Coastland Times (1951-2009) historical newspaper collection and Sea Chest magazine (award winning high school project documenting life on Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks). Both are fully searchable by keywords.

Online-Only Access to Dare County Library's Virtual Library

Students in Grades K-12 can now get access to our digital resources by getting an online-only Dare County Library card number.  DURING THE COVID-19 VIRUS CLOSURE, RESIDENTS AND PROPERTY OWNERS OF ALL AGES CAN COMPLETE THIS FORM. 

Please complete the registration form below and you will receive via email a library card number and PIN (Personal Identification Number) that will allow you to access all of our digital resources.

NOTE: You will not be able to borrow physical items such as books or DVDs from the Dare County Library with this account. An "online only" account can easily be upgraded to full borrowing privileges when we receive a parental signature and proof of address in person at any of our Dare County Library locations.
