Dare County has declared a State of Emergency due to the unprecedented public health threat posed by COVID-19 and determined that restrictions and prohibitions are necessary to protect public health and safety and are also in keeping with the President's Coronavirus Guidelines for America. Visitors and non-resident property owners are prohibited from entering Dare County. View details at darenc.com/entry.   Click here for the latest information on COVID-19.

The Dare County Library locations are closed and so are our Book Drops until further notice.

If you have library materials out, NO OVERDUE FINES will be charged while we are closed. We prefer that customers hold onto the materials they currently have out. We are automatically “updating” the due date of everything checked out since March 1 (we closed on March 16). Again, NO fines will be charged on any items during the weeks we are closed.

Following CDC guidance, items that are returned must be handled carefully, since COVID-19 may live on plastic for up to 72 hours. A majority of our books are covered in mylar jackets.

Out of an abundance of safety for our library staff, and to conserve our limited supply of gloves and disinfectant, we will be closing our book drops until further notice.

We also ask that no one bring or leave “donations” of personal used books at this time.

If you have any questions, you can call the library during weekday hours. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all in person when this is all over!

But our Virtual Library never closes!

Need Assistance?

Unsure how to use our online resources?

You need a Dare County Library card and a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to access many of our eResources.   If you already have a library card, but not a PIN, please call the library during weekday hours (until further notice) and we can set you up with a PIN.

Don't have a Dare County Library card?

You can easily sign up for one from home. Visit:

https://www.darenc.com/departments/libraries/children-s-services/students

This site is usually reserved for students only, but during the remainder of our COVID-19 closure, Dare County Residents and Property Owners of all ages can apply for a card from home. During weekday hours staff will turn your application around quickly and email you your library barcode as well as your PIN (Personal Identification Number) so you can gain access to these resources.

Call any of the Dare County Libraries weekdays during daytime hours. A staff person will be happy to set up your account and tell you more about our digital resources.
