The Dare County Library collection includes approximately 80,000 items for children, teens adults. Including

  • eBooks for adults, teens and children
  • Digital Magazines

Dare County Library customers also have access to 130,000 additional items owned by the other libraries in the East Albemarle Regional Library System. Items can be sent from any library location to the one where it is most convenient for you to borrow. This is a free service. Our frequent courier service allows for timely delivery of requested materials from one library to another.

Most items can be borrowed for a three week loan period and can be renewed either in person, over the phone or via the internet via secure access and the “My Account” feature

Borrowed materials can be returned 24/7 at book returns located in front of each of the three libraries. Additional book returns are located at Southern Shores Town Hall, Nags Head Town Hall, in Rodanthe between the EMS station and Hotline, and at the Fessenden Center in Buxton.


The library offers NC LIVE, an internet-based set of reference databases and indices, including full-text magazine and newspaper articles, plus Learning Express online academic and career practice tests, and Heritage Quest for genealogy research. As a registered borrower of the Dare County Library, you qualify for access to NC LIVE from the library or home or work computer. Access to NCLIVE databases is only available with your 14 digit library card number.

Other locally available databases include Edition; and Tumblebook Library, a database of animated picture books for children. Ask any Dare County Librarian for information about these databases. 


Each location offers free Internet access, with computers that feature the Windows 7 operating system, Internet Explorer 11, Mozilla Firefox 46.01, Avast! Antivirus. Adobe Reader 11, and Microsoft Office 2010: including Word 2010, Excel 2010, and PowerPoint 2010. Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a 30 minute time limit when others are waiting.

Computer users can retrieve and save files from and to USB/Flash devices. Files can be saved to a temp folder (Q drive) on the desktop, but will be deleted when the computer is re-started. You can not save files to the hard drive of our computers. The CD-ROM/DVD drive is enabled, but executable files (“.exe”) will not run due to security permission restrictions.

  • Printing from our computers (black and white only) costs 15 cents per page printed.
  • FREE WiFi at every Dare County Library Branch
  • Computers for children are available at each branch with educational programs and animated books.


The library has a small but growing collection of literacy materials housed at the Kill Devil Hills Library. Materials include both English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) for adult learners. Literacy materials can be borrowed and can also be sent to the Dare County Library where it is most convenient for you. Available at all three locations. Copies cost 15¢ per copy and up depending on paper size. The public can receive or send faxes from each location, for which there is a charge.


Home delivery of library materials for the homebound or elderly who are unable to get to the library can be arranged by contacting the Manteo Library at 252.473.2372


The Manteo and Kill Devil Hills Libraries have meeting rooms which are available free of charge to non-profit groups for public meetings.


We also offer an Inter-Library Loan service, where we can request materials from public and academic libraries throughout the state and country. There is a nominal fee for this service to help defray the cost of postage.


Staff is available to offer reference and research assistance at allocations. Our County Reference Librarian has developed and organized a collection of especially useful weblinks which can be found at East Albemarle Regional Library.


Dare County Library staff are always ready to recommend a good book. A series of “If You Enjoy" lists are available so you can easily find books similar to some of the more popular authors and genres in our collection.
