Dare County debris contractor, Southern Disaster Recovery, is anticipating all debris removal on roadways throughout unincorporated Dare County should be completed by October 31, 2019. 

To expedite debris removal, please ensure storm-related debris is in 4 SEPARATE PILES in front of your property, in the right-of-way. Keep it at least 30 feet away from fire hydrants. 

  • Vegetative Debris (limbs, leaves, branches, sea grass, etc.) DO NOT BAG! 

  • Construction and Demolition Materials (building materials, insulation, cardboard, concrete, shingles, etc.)

  • Metal (appliances)

  • Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics (oil, bleach toilet cleaner, televisions, computers, etc.)

*Large items such as cars, boats, trailers, and campers will be not be accepted and must be disposed of by the owner. 

Hatteras Island

Debris removal continues on Hatteras Island. Crews are experiencing delays due to ocean overwash. Removal will continue as conditions allow. 

Unincorporated Colington (outside the Colington Harbour Gate)

Debris removal in the unincorporated areas of Colington, outside the Colington Harbour gate, is underway. 

Dare Mainland - East Lake, Stumpy Point, Manns Harbor 

Debris removal is underway in Manns Harbor. Once completed, crews will begin debris removal in East Lake and Stumpy Point. 

Martin’s Point

Debris removal in Martin’s Point has been completed.


Debris removal in Wanchese is expected to be completed later today, Friday, October 11.

Roanoke Island (Outside of Manteo town limits)

Debris removal began this morning on the north end of Roanoke Island and outside Manteo town limits.  

Additional trucks will begin work in these areas as they complete debris removal in other sections of unincorporated Dare County.


The Sanitation Department provides residential and commercial solid waste collection for all areas of unincorporated Dare County (Martin's Point, Colington, and all of Hatteras Island) and the Town of Kitty Hawk. Solid Waste is collected and transported to the Manns Harbor Transfer Station and then transported to Bertie County for final disposition.

This department also provides County residents with a Large Item Pick-Up, which is held once a year. This service helps residents dispose of furniture and white goods not picked up during regular sanitation service.

County residents may purchase a new trash can through the Dare County Sanitation Department. Cash, checks and major credit cards accepted. Please call 252.475.5880 or 252.475.5881 to place the order.

Depending on the age of the trash can, replacement parts may be available for purchase.  Call our helpful staff to determine if the can will be able to be repaired, or if a new can will need to be purchased. 

Bear-Resistant Trash Cans 
A limited supply of bear-resistant trash cans are available for the same purchase price as regular cans. A locking mechanism allows containers to be easily opened by humans using one hand but prevents bears from opening with claws, paws, and teeth.
