The Sanitation Department provides residential and commercial solid waste collection for all areas of unincorporated Dare County (Martin's Point, Colington, and all of Hatteras Island) and the Town of Kitty Hawk. Solid Waste is collected and transported to the Manns Harbor Transfer Station and then transported to Bertie County for final disposition.
This department also provides County residents with a Large Item Pick-Up, which is held once a year. This service helps residents dispose of furniture and white goods not picked up during regular sanitation service.
County residents may purchase a new trash can through the Dare County Sanitation Department. Cash, checks and major credit cards accepted. Please call 252.475.5880 or 252.475.5881 to place the order.

Depending on the age of the trash can, replacement parts may be available for purchase. Call our helpful staff to determine if the can will be able to be repaired, or if a new can will need to be purchased.
Bear-Resistant Trash Cans
A limited supply of bear-resistant trash cans are available for the same purchase price as regular cans. A locking mechanism allows containers to be easily opened by humans using one hand but prevents bears from opening with claws, paws, and teeth.
